Bogdan doesnât much like snow. In his long experience, only two types of people do like snow. People who donât see much of it, like the British, or people who live near mountains. In Poland he saw an awful lot of snow, but nobody was skiing. So what was in it for him?
He lets himself into Elizabeth and Stephenâs flat. The sitting-room light is on, so Bogdan enters. Stephen is standing at the window, staring out into the snowy darkness.
âStephen,â says Bogdan, âis me.â
âOld chap,â says Stephen. âSomething queer is afoot.â
âOK,â says Bogdan. âYou want a cup of tea? You want a whisky? Watch TV?â
âI know you,â says Stephen. âWeâve spoken.â
âI am your friend,â says Bogdan. âYou are my friend. We went for a drive the other day.â
âThought as much,â says Stephen. âIf I tell you something, you wonât think Iâm off my rocker?â
âOff your rocker?â This is a new one on Bogdan.
âOff my rocker,â says Stephen, suddenly irritated. He has never been irritated with Bogdan before. âDoolally, round the twist, for goodnessâ sake.â
âYou are on your rocker,â says Bogdan, hoping thatâs an expression.
âOnly,â says Stephen, âthereâs a fox, who comes to see me.â
âSnowy?â
âSnowy, yes,â says Stephen. âYou know him? Chap with the ears?â
âI know him,â says Bogdan. âHe is a fine fox.â
âHe hasnât been this evening,â says Stephen.
âIs the snow,â says Bogdan. âHeâs keeping warm somewhere.â
âNonsense,â says Stephen. âA fox doesnât mind a bit of snow. A fox doesnât mind a bit of anything. Donât you know anything about foxes?â
âNot really,â says Bogdan.
âWell, take the word of a man who does. Where is he?â
âDid you miss him maybe?â Bogdan asks.
âI never miss him,â says Stephen. âYou ask my wife, sheâs knocking about somewhere. I never miss him. We never miss each other.â
âYou want I should go and look?â
âI think we should look together,â says Stephen. âI donât mind telling you Iâm worried. You have a torch?â
âYes,â says Bogdan.
âAnd weâre pals? Good pals?â
Bogdan nods.
âWas I short with you?â Stephen asks. âI feel like I was quite short, and I didnât mean to be. I wasnât expecting you, you see, and we donât have anything in.â
Bogdan shakes his head. âNo, you werenât short with me. Letâs get you dressed. Is cold out there.â
âThere was a big chap with a beard and hat around earlier too,â says Stephen. âThereâs been all sorts going on.â
